HYDRA HEAD RECORDS IS DEAD

It was with a tremendously heavy heart that we report that Hydra Head Records – which has played home to such metal/hardcore/noise luminaries as Botch, Isis, Neurosis, Cave In, Converge, Coalesce, Daughters, Sunn O))), Oxbow, Harvey Milk and even the friggin’ MELVINS! – will be closing their proverbial doors after nearly twenty years of existence. In a message posted on their blog this morning, Hydra Head Records founder Aaron Turner explains:

“The decision to pull the plug has not been an easy one, and in some ways is a not a choice at all. The simple fact of the matter is we’ve been running on empty for a while now and cannot afford to keep our doors open for much longer. Years of imbalance between creative ideals and financial realities, personal problems amongst the label operators, an unwillingness to compromise our aesthetic standards, a tendency towards releasing challenging (i.e. unmarketable) artists, and the steady decline of the music industry in general, are amongst the chief reasons for our inability to continue. It is a harsh but undeniable reality, and one which we are attempting to confront with as much integrity and grace as is afforded by the circumstances.”

The label will continue to run through December at which point they will terminate all production of new releases, maintaining their back catalog in order to satisfy any and all existing debts.

Mr. Turner’s full statement can be read below. Below, take a moment to take a look at some of our favorite HHR artists making the racket that changed the musical landscape. “Thinking Man’s Metal,” they called it.

STRIFE MAKING OF NEW ALBUM 'WITNESS A REBIRTH' DOCUMENTARY PART ONE

6131 Records and STRIFE give you an inside look into the making of the band's upcoming album Witness A Rebirth.

http://youtu.be/pYx1lK6Az0w

This first video from the three part documentary series, 'The Sao Paulo Sessions,' takes you down to Mix Nova Studios in Brazil and shows the recording process with drummer Iggor Cavalera (founding member of Sepultura and current member of Cavalera Conspiracy / Mixhell). Directed and edited by Pablo Menna (Questions).

STRIFE traveled to Brazil to start the recording process with producer Nick Jett (Terror, Rotting Out, Backtrack) at the helm. Soon after, they returned to California and put the rest of the pieces into place, including guest vocals by Billy Graziadei (of Biohazard) and Scott Vogel (of Terror), plus a guitar solo by Marc Rizzo (of Soulfly). The result serves as a testament to their talent, bridging their past (especially the highly acclaimed album In This Defiance, with which this album shares 4/5 of the members) with a more contemporary hardcore sound.

STRIFE's Witness A Rebirth is due out this Fall on 6131 Records.
